A Detailed Review of the Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens Including Sample Images

Nikon NIKKOR Z 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR Lens

This lens of focal length 180 to 600mm and maximum aperture of f/5.6 to 6.3 is not one of Nikon’s S range of lenses, it is a relatively cheaper version but still of very high quality and performance.  The lens effectively replaces the older 200-500mm f/5.6 lens of the old DSLR series of lenses.

The filter size is 95 mm and the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 to 6.3 and a minimum aperture of f/32 to 36.

The angle of view of the lens is 13° 40′ to 4° 10′ and the minimum focus distance is 1.3 m with a maximum magnification of 0.25x and a macro reproduction ratio of 1:4.

The optical design is 25 elements in 17 groups and comprises 9 rounded diaphragm blades.

The lens has a removable and rotating tripod collar and has a 95mm filter.

The lens diameter is 110mm and 315.5 mm in length with a weight of 1.95 kg.

I have only recently purchased this lens but it has already proven itsellf as a wonderful lens for wildlife photography particulary for birds.

The maximum aperture of this lens starts at f/5.6 and does change to f/6.3 when fully extended.
The aperture changes with focal length as follows, f/5.6 at 180-290mm, f6 at 300-480mm, and f/6.3 at 490-600mm.

All the focusing and zooming with this lens is internal with the result that the lens does not change in physical length as the lens is zoomed or focussed.

Nikon does allow use of both the TC-1.4x and theTC-2.0x teleconverters to be used on this lens.
The lens alone is 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3, the lens with the TC-1.4x teleconverter is 252-840mm f/8-9 and with the TC-2.0x teleconverter is 360-1200mm f/11-12.7. So the lens combined with teleconverters has huge potential for wild life photography.

The lens has built in VR and is rated to save 5.5 f stops.

The zoom ring of the lens rotates from 180 to 600mm in less than a quarter turn so it is very fast to adjust the focal length if zooming.

From my initial usage of this lens it appears to be very fast focussing for action use.

The following images in the gallery indicate some of the possibilities of this lens.  The gallery images have been taken with the Nikon Z6 II camera and also the Z50 DX camera.
